Can someone explain why wholesalers don’t go into retailing?

<a href="

In search of increasing profits, why don’t wholesalers get into the retail business themselves and cut out the middleman?

For example, why does Microsoft only sell Office through retailers instead of through its own website?

Or even with physical goods, if you have a popular wholesale product, why not invest in retail operations to ultimately increase your profits by cutting out the middleman?
